1. Why Visit Tamsui in Winter?

Tamsui is a perfect winter destination. Unlike Taiwan’s sweltering summers, the cooler months make strolling through its historic streets more enjoyable. An added bonus? Fewer bugs! If you’re bug-averse, this is the best time to visit Taiwan. I spent 4 nights and 5 days exploring Taipei, including a full day in Tamsui, and it was the ideal duration for sightseeing without feeling rushed.

2. Tamsui travel guide knows how to Get to Tamsui

Tamsui Line (Red MRT Line) connects Taipei city center to Tamsui seamlessly.

  • From Ximending: Board the MRT at Taipei Main Station and transfer to the Red Line heading toward Tamsui.
  • Travel Time: Approximately 50 minutes from central Taipei.
  • Cost: Affordable at just a few USD per trip.

Once on the Red Line, take the MRT all the way to the terminal station, Tamsui Station. The trains are modern, efficient, and easy to navigate, even for first-time visitors.

1. What is Hongmao Castle?

Hongmao Castle, or Fort San Domingo, is a historic site that has witnessed Taiwan’s complex colonial past. Its name translates to “Red Hair Castle,” a term used to refer to Dutch colonizers. Built by the Dutch East India Company in the 17th century, it was later occupied by the Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese, reflecting Taiwan’s diverse history.

2. Highlights of the Visit

  • Admission Fee: 80 NTD (~$2.50 USD) for access to three sites: Hongmao Castle, Little White House (Xiaobai Gong), and Huwei Fort.

  • Exhibits: Inside, you’ll find artifacts and displays detailing the fort’s history and colonial influences.

  • Photo Opportunities: The striking red-brick exterior is Instagram-worthy, especially on a sunny day.

3. Tips for Visitors

  • Keep Your Ticket: You’ll need it if you plan to re-enter after visiting other nearby sites.

  • Schedule: Closed on the first Monday of each month, so plan accordingly.

If you’ve seen the iconic movie “Secret” by Jay Chou, you’ll recognize Tamkang University immediately. This small yet picturesque campus is steeped in history and charm.

The campus is easily accessible from Hongmao Castle and offers a pleasant walk with scenic views of the Tamsui River.

No visit to Tamsui is complete without trying its famous castella cakes, a fluffy and lightly sweetened sponge cake.

  • Where to Find: Several stalls line the streets leading to Hongmao Castle.
