Hi everyone, it’s Trip with Kim!

When visiting Barcelona, adding a day trip to Montserrat Monastery is one of the best decisions you can make. As one of the most popular day trips from the city, Montserrat offers breathtaking scenery, rich history, and cultural treasures. Whether you’re here for the stunning views, the famous Black Madonna, or the chance to hike, Montserrat is an experience you won’t forget.

Here’s everything you need to know to plan your Montserrat day trip and make the most of it!

Montserrat Monastery1

1. What is Montserrat Monastery?

Montserrat, meaning “serrated mountain,” gets its name from the unique tooth-like peaks that define its stunning landscape.

  • Famous for:

    • The Montserrat Monastery, home to the Black Madonna.
    • Spectacular mountain views and hiking trails.
    • Cultural treasures like the Escolania Boys’ Choir.

  • How to Get There:

    1. Guided Tour (Recommended): Most convenient and stress-free option.
    2. DIY Option:
      • Take a train from Barcelona to Monistrol de Montserrat.
      • Ride a cable car or rack railway up to the monastery.

If you’re short on time or want to visit multiple locations like Girona or Sitges, I highly recommend booking a guided tour.

2. Highlights of the Montserrat Monastery Tour

When I visited Montserrat, I chose a day tour that included transportation and a guided experience. Here’s what I loved about the trip:

  2.1 Montserrat Monastery

The centerpiece of any Montserrat visit is the Benedictine monastery, famous for housing the Black Madonna statue.

  • Black Madonna:

    • A wooden statue of the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus, blackened over time.
    • Visitors can touch the golden orb held by Mary, symbolizing the world, while making a wish.
    • Tip: Arrive early to avoid long queues for viewing the statue.

  • Inside the Monastery:

    • Beautiful stained glass windows, intricate sculptures, and stunning ceiling murals.
    • Unique features include light installations, some representing FC Barcelona!

2.2 Cable Car to Sant Joan Viewpoint

For panoramic views, I took the Sant Joan cable car, which offers a bird’s-eye perspective of the monastery and surrounding mountains.

  • Cost: €15 round-trip.
  • My Verdict: While the ride is beautiful, the viewpoint itself wasn’t overly impressive. If you’re on a budget, you can skip it.

  2.3 Sant Miquel Viewpoint

For a more rewarding experience, I recommend hiking to the Sant Miquel viewpoint.

  • Distance: ~45 minutes round-trip.
  • Why Visit: The walk is scenic and leads to a peaceful spot overlooking the monastery and valleys below.

3. Adding Girona or Sitges to Your Trip

Many tours include additional stops at Girona or Sitges, making your day even more memorable.

Girona:

  • A charming medieval city famous for its well-preserved architecture and as a filming location for Game of Thrones.
  • Highlights:
    • The colorful houses along the Onyar River.
    • The Cathedral of Girona.
    • Wandering the old town’s narrow streets.

Sitges:

  • A vibrant coastal town known for its beaches and artistic vibe.
  • Best For: Relaxing by the sea or enjoying the café culture.

La Roca Village Outlet:

Some tours also include a shopping stop at La Roca Village, a popular outlet mall. If you’re a shopaholic, consider a tour that offers this add-on!

4. Tips for Visiting Montserrat Monastery

  • Arrive Early: Aim to reach Montserrat by 9 AM to beat the crowds.
  • Wear Comfortable Shoes: There’s plenty of walking and hiking involved.
  • Bring Snacks: While there’s a bakery near the monastery, it’s always a good idea to carry some snacks and water.
  • Plan for Weather: Even in summer, the mountain can get chilly, so bring a light jacket.
  • Don’t Miss the Boys’ Choir: If your visit aligns with their schedule, make time to hear the world-famous Escolania Boys’ Choir perform.

5. Why You Should Visit Montserrat Monastery

Montserrat isn’t just a day trip—it’s a unique experience that blends natural beauty, cultural heritage, and spiritual significance. Whether you’re hiking to a viewpoint, admiring the Black Madonna, or just soaking in the stunning mountain scenery, this is a place that stays with you long after you leave.

If you’re planning a Barcelona itinerary, don’t forget to include this unforgettable destination.
