Hi everyone, it’s Trip with Kim!

If you’re planning a multi-country trip across Europe, chances are you’ll need to hop on a flight between destinations. While trains are great for shorter distances, flights can sometimes be cheaper and faster, especially when using budget airlines like Ryanair. Known for its low fares and frequent schedules, Ryanair is a popular yet polarizing choice due to its strict policies, delays, and minimal services.

In this post, I’ll share my experience flying Ryanair from Venice (VCE) to Barcelona (BCN), including the booking process, check-in, baggage tips, and a detailed flight review.

1. Booking Ryanair Tickets

How to Book Ryanair

Booking tickets on Ryanair’s official website or app is straightforward. Sign up for a free account to receive exclusive discounts and faster booking options.

For my Venice to Barcelona route, I chose the Plus Plan, which includes a 20 kg checked bag, reserved seating, and priority boarding. My ticket cost €117 (~$125 USD). Without baggage, prices start at €50–€60 (~$55–$65 USD), making it one of the most affordable international flights.

Key Tip: Always compare Ryanair’s website prices to third-party platforms like Skyscanner. However, booking directly ensures better customer support in case of changes or cancellations.

Understanding Ryanair Fare Plans

Ryanair offers multiple fare tiers:

PlanInclusionsBest For
ValueOne small bag (under-seat size)Backpack-only travelers
RegularPriority boarding + small cabin bag + 10 kg carry-onShort trips with cabin bags
PlusRegular inclusions + 20 kg checked bag + reserved standard seatLonger trips with luggage
Flexi PlusAll of the above + fast track security + free flight changesBusiness travelers or flexible schedules

Pro Tip: If you’re traveling light, stick to the Value Plan. For those needing checked luggage, Plus Planoffers the best value.

2. Ryanair Check-In and Baggage Process

Online Check-In

Ryanair allows online check-in starting 24 hours before departure for free (48 hours for reserved seats). Boarding passes can be saved on your phone or printed. I recommend using the app for convenience.

If you’re checking a bag, head to the counter at least 2 hours before departure. In my case, I arrived at Marco Polo Airport 3 hours early, which gave me plenty of time to relax at the airport lounge.

Baggage Tips for Ryanair

  • Checked Baggage Limit: 20 kg for Plus/Flexi Plus plans.
  • Carry-On Size Limit:
    • Small bag (40 x 20 x 25 cm) fits under the seat.
    • For an additional fee, Priority Boarding allows a second carry-on (55 x 40 x 20 cm).

My checked bag weighed 18 kg, well under the limit, and the process was smooth. However, Ryanair is notoriously strict about excess baggage fees, so double-check your luggage weight before arriving at the airport.

Pro Tip: Use a portable luggage scale to ensure you stay within the limits.

3. Boarding and Flight Experience at Ryanair

Boarding Process

Unlike most airlines, Ryanair flights often board from outdoor gates. In Venice, I was taken by bus to the plane parked on the tarmac. Boarding was quick and hassle-free, with passengers allowed to enter from both the front and rear doors of the aircraft.

Aircraft and Seating

  • Aircraft Type: Boeing 737-800
  • Seat Layout: 3-3 across
  • Comfort: Seats are thin and firm, but legroom was surprisingly spacious.

While the seats aren’t the most comfortable, the extra legroom was a nice surprise. However, the lack of seat reclinemight be uncomfortable for longer flights.

Key Observation: The cabin atmosphere was lively and loud, with minimal enforcement of in-flight etiquette. If you’re sensitive to noise, bring noise-canceling headphones.

Onboard Services

As expected from a budget airline, Ryanair offers no complimentary meals, drinks, or entertainment. Snacks and beverages are available for purchase. Prices for onboard items are slightly higher than usual, so I suggest eating before boarding.

Despite being a no-frills airline, the flight crew was friendly and professional, ensuring a smooth journey.

4. Arrival in Barcelona with Ryanair

We arrived in Barcelona 20 minutes early, which was a pleasant surprise. Baggage delivery was quick, and I was able to start exploring Barcelona ahead of schedule.

Pro Tip: Ryanair flights often use secondary terminals at airports, which may require extra travel time to the city center. Check your arrival terminal in advance to plan your onward journey.

5. Final Thoughts: Is Ryanair Worth It?

Ryanair delivers on its promise of affordable travel, but you must plan carefully to avoid extra fees and inconvenience. Here’s my take:

Pros:

  • Incredibly low ticket prices.
  • Efficient boarding and baggage handling.
  • Convenient routes across Europe.

Cons:

  • Basic, no-frills experience.
  • Strict baggage policies.
  • Limited in-flight comfort.

Ryanair is perfect for budget-conscious travelers who prioritize cost over luxury. If you’re willing to compromise on comfort for savings, Ryanair is an excellent choice for short-haul European flights.

6. Power Tips for Ryanair Travelers

  • Travel Light: Avoid checked baggage fees by packing efficiently.
  • Book Early: Prices rise closer to the departure date.
  • Print or Save Your Ticket: Missing a boarding pass at the gate can result in hefty fees.
  • Bring Snacks and Water: Onboard food is overpriced and limited.
  • Choose Your Seat: Pay for seat selection if you’re traveling with a group.
